It is normal for kids to have strong feelings about dental appointments, such as worry, fear, or anxiety. We understand how overwhelming visits can be for our young patients—new environments, unfamiliar sounds, or previous dental experiences.
Sedation dentistry is often used as a safe and effective way to keep kids comfortable and relaxed throughout their treatment. Overall, it creates a more pleasant visit and boosts confidence for future appointments.
Parents may understand the benefits of sedation dentistry, but one of the most common questions we get is—Is sedation safe for my child? So, let’s talk about it.
When is Sedation Dentistry Used?
The use of sedation plays a big role in pediatric dentistry. Because we are always trying to establish a solid foundation for lifelong oral health, we want to ensure that our young patients have a positive, encouraging experience. Sometimes, a little extra help is needed.
Sedation can reduce stress, fear, and anxiety that some kids have when it comes to dental visits and treatment. It makes it easier for kids to sit still for longer procedures. It can help make those with special needs more comfortable. And sedation can even prevent the need for multiple visits, which is always a win for those with busy schedules.
All of this allows oral health issues to be addressed in a calm, safe, and efficient manner.
Types of Sedation
There are several types of sedation available based on your child’s age, health, and comfort level. The type and length of treatment are also considered when determining the best course of action.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is the most common method of pediatric sedation. A small mask is placed over the nose, and a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is inhaled. This helps our anxious young patients relax and remain calm, while allowing our dental team to move efficiently through the treatment.
Laughing gas begins working right away, and as soon as it is turned off, the effects of it will dissipate almost immediately.
General Anesthesia (Hospital Dentistry)
Certain situations arise in which general anesthesia, a deeper sedation, may be more beneficial—such as for extensive dental work, extreme anxiety or fear, or special needs patients. Treatment using this type is done in a hospital setting with a licensed anesthesiologist to ensure maximum safety.
The child will be comfortably asleep and unaware of the work taking place. Many wake up without any recollection of the treatment. For those who couldn’t otherwise tolerate dental care, this is an ideal option.
Is Sedation Safe?
Safety is of utmost priority. At Suffolk Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we will never move forward with using any type of sedation without speaking with the parents first. We will thoroughly review the patient’s medical history and follow dosing guidelines based on weight and age. During the treatment, the vitals are continuously monitored by a qualified professional.
As with anything, there are risks involved with sedation. Nitrous oxide has few risks or side effects. General anesthesia is used in a hospital setting to provide greater safety, as this type involves greater risks.
All risks will be discussed with the parents first. And any questions or concerns will be addressed before moving forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sedation covered by insurance?
Coverage will vary based on your policy. Most plans do cover nitrous oxide and local anesthesia, but hospital dentistry may require additional authorization. Our team is always happy to help review your benefits.
Can sedation help my child with sensory sensitivities?
Yes, of course. Children with sensory sensitivities can often find dental visits overwhelming. Sedation can reduce this overstimulation while protecting their well-being. In other words, they can safely get the care they need.
